Spark – Power Management

The Spark uses power saving features to preserve battery life. Below is an overview of the different modes for when the Spark automatically shuts down or goes to sleep. These modes are subject to change as further power saving features are integrated into the firmware. Please make sure to connect your Spark to WiFi to obtain the latest fimware updates.

  • Instant Read Probe: with the instant read probe left open, the Spark will sleep after 90 seconds.

  • External Probe: with an external probe connected, the Spark will sleep after 10 minutes but automatically push data every 5 minutes to keep realtime temperature reporting.

  • Menu Only: The Spark can be turned on with a single button push which allows menu navigation and configuration. The Spark will power off after 30 seconds.

  • SyncMode: With this mode enabled, the Spark will stay activated for 30 minutes, then return to sleep.

Each of the above timers are reset when the Spark detects motion. When in sleep mode, a simple tap will wake up the Spark.

Normal Use Assumptions

The Spark’s battery is specified to last approximately 12 months with normal use, assuming a full charge and a healthy battery at the start of the period. We describe normal use as the following:

  • Every day instant read use (approximately 30 seconds per day, 365 days a year).

  • Every three weeks recording an 18hr session using external probe (17 times a year).

Other factors including extreme cold or hot environments can degrade Li-Ion battery performance and may impact the approximate 12-month specification.
